Stress and Anxiety? %$#@ that %$#^


Would you feel better if you were less stressed and anxious?


Stress and anxiety are an accepted and expected part of living in the modern world, right?

After all we have stress at school, stress from our jobs, our relationships and of course our finances. Then there is the %$#& who just cut me off and the jerk who cut in front of me in line at the grocery store. Don't even get me started on all the idiots messaging while they drive. Let's not forget the government, the news, terrorists, and the fact that I have to pick up the kids right now. Oh yea, and the damn car needs an oil change before we go to the cottage with the in laws (shudder) to "relax." And the damn (insert local sports team) lost last night. 

Sound familiar?

Well here's the thing. Believe it or not, you are making it all up. Stay with me as there may just be another way to see it. 

Here is a very relatable example of what I am suggesting.

I am driving with my son who is in the learning to but, "already thinks he is great at it" driving phase of his development as a new licensee. It is Monday afternoon and he is behind the wheel for whatever errands we are running. My son is speeding, not checking blind spots properly and of course wants his music on the radio. All I can think is that he is not paying attention. The music is a distraction, and-"dammit son did you signal properly?". There is no way he will pass his test! He is just not taking this seriously. No way can he be trusted with the car, let alone the responsibility of not killing people with this 2000 pounds of high powered death on wheels. He is not ready and I am stressed out and anxious. Clearly he is not absorbing what he is being taught. Oh and by the way, I feel it is all my fault for not doing a better job to prepare him. 

Feel familiar?

Fast forward to Tuesday.

We are on the same road at basically the same time as the day before. He is speeding, not checking his blind spots, everything he was doing yesterday. The difference is that today I am relaxed and at ease. I see my son is trying his best and that in time he will get better and better. Wait a second? He is actually doing a pretty good job, keeping up with the flow of traffic, and did he just remember to check his blind spot? He is going to be pretty good at this. Decision making needs practice but it's pretty obvious that he is a natural. Way to go son, you rock!

"You know son, it's funny. You are doing exactly what you did yesterday and it doesn't bother me. I can see that you are trying your best and are paying attention." 

"I know Dad, I am just doing exactly what I did yesterday"
